Barbican

On Saturday I popped up to the Barbican to have a look at two exhibitions: “Rebel Rebel” which is on until the 26th February, and “More Travels with My Camera” which ended yesterday, as well as take a guided architectural tour around the district. This was by no means my first visit to the Barbican – having visited it frequently as a child to attended concerts and such with my parents. However, learning more about the construction history (such as the debate on materiality and the costs, both economic and physical, of the chosen fabrication methods), along with current development flashpoints (Diller Scofidio + Renfro) was incredibly interesting, giving me an excuse to get some more b/w photography in. I would thoroughly recommend both the tour, as well as the “Rebel Rebel” exhibition, by Soheila Sokhanvari, if you get the chance to go. The photography exhibition was a lovely collection of portraits, with those on show mostly from India & Myanmar, by the photographer Adrian Whittle. One day I’d like to get the social confidence to be able to ask to take portraits of strangers…

However, before that, I had a wander from Oxford Circus to Goodge Street, and encountered two very interesting facades, and fonts (as in, typeface). I think that has perhaps given me an idea for my next photography theme: “facades & typefaces”, which I began to explore on an aborted trip last Sunday (I got far too cold). We’ll see.
