A New Year, a new milestone
The past year has provided a couple of critical professional & personal development milestones, not least of which was exhibiting some photographic work I had taken earlier in the year at The Holy Art Gallery, near Dalston Kingsland in London. Then there is also the opportunity I have been provided by both my alma mater and my current employer, for taking up a part-time teaching position at UCA to deliver a module in parametric and generative computational skills for second year undergraduate architecture students.
The exhibition was a great moment, and it was truly amazing to see so many beautiful works on show by other artists, and helps put your own work in perspective (and thus future development). Now I need to take a moment to understand what this will mean for my own development as a very keen, but currently amateur, photographer, and how that would dovetail with my current and future professional commitments. One aspect of the photography I have been doing that I feel requires further thought and exploration, is the development of ‘studies’ or ‘stories’ of work, as I understand an awful lot of professionals do. Whether it is architectural studies (the Barbican has been a big focus of mine this past year), or some more abstract ideas (capturing architectural details and qualities with a differing perspective), or outright light/shadow play, I think it may be helpful as a project to focus on one or two particular briefs.
With respect to teaching, being honest, the overriding thought is “don’t screw up”. I’m hopeful it will be an incredibly enlightening experience being on the other side of things, but I’d be lying if I wasn’t suitably cautious, despite the prep work I have done (itself built upon >6 years of knowledge).
Oh, and on a completely different note, I’m hoping it’ll be third time lucky for the motorbike theory test. I missed out by a single point, a *single point* when I took it in December. Ugh. I’ll get there, as that dream of riding a Triumph or Ducati has not gone away over the past 20+ years.
Since setting up an Instagram profile, the overwhelming majority of weekly, or monthly, snippets into my photographic development happen there. I do however have every intention of keeping this website going for as long as I have the financial wherewithal to do so. Below are what I consider to be a collection of key photographic moments from around July onwards.
