Project 01 - Architectural Technology
We had our first lecture this afternoon - Technology 01. The lecturer seems pretty cool - although you don’t want to get on her bad side.
As for the content of this lecture series - it looks very interesting. “Architectural Technologies” - a combination of ‘sustainable’ design (read ‘Design as Politics’ by Tony Fry, if you want to understand my, skepticism, of current ‘sustainable design’ practices) with practical knowledge of what goes into construction - how to plan, how to talk, how to not look like a tool, research, know your site etc etc and more. We’re also expected to get in 4hrs additional reading in per lecture - it is going to be very much a case of practicing good time management.
We get our first project briefing tomorrow - “Bodyscapes_a” - which seems to encompass wearable architecture in relation to our surroundings, namely Canterbury.
I was also speaking with some 3rd years, and their project brief considers architecture as a means in relation to “protest” - think it’s use within the Umbrella Protest movement in Hong Kong a couple of years back for e.g. I really hope we get that project brief in our 3rd year (assuming I make it!), as it sounds amazing. Incidently, there were incidents in previous years of students getting in to trouble with the London authorities due to the nature of the project brief. To be fair though, that isn’t difficult these days.
