M.Arch Project 02 - Interim Crit

We had our interim crit for Project 02 (which is more like Project 01 Part 2) on Friday 16th. Having watched another tutor group’s presentations the day before, I realised that I was rusty when it came to project presentations (as I’d only WIP drawings to show, no visuals etc). In part, it is because I learnt the hard way in undergraduate that it is far quicker, and as I’ve found, more useful to rapidly iterate in 2D first, moving to 3D modelling after.

M.Arch Project 01 - Final Crit

We had our final crit of the first phase of the project today, and my feedback was predominantly as expected (to sum - still missing some of my workings, oh how maths teachers of old would be rolling their eyes). However, these are missing due to my continued troubleshooting of how best to diagrammatically represent them, rather than because I’m being lazy!

M.Arch Project 01 - Critical Review

We have our first critical review tomorrow for the project, and my biggest concern is whether I have managed to string together a coherent argument for my research direction. I’ve been pulling at a lot of threads over the past 4 weeks, my brain is fried, and I worry that I’ve overstretched and still have a too abstract approach to it. I’ve uploaded what I plan to present tomorrow, and it is shown below.

Best laid plans...

So. Unfortunately the course I was attending at UCD wasn’t working out; but I am damn glad that I at least attempted the shift. Dublin is a lovely city, and hopefully one day, when the world isn’t so crazy, I’ll be able to revisit it (for the 4th time!) and have a chance to truly enjoy it. I’ll be moving back to the UK by the end of the year, and we’ll see what that brings.

Autumn in Dublin

I decided to take a couple of hours this morning to walk up to Phoenix Park and back, which coupled with the rather beautiful Autumn morning we had, provided some opportunities for photography. Here are a few shots:

Grasshopper Grids Part 3

Following on from the previous post, and building upon both the prior grid generation scripts, as well as knowledge from a grasshopper tutorial provided in the second year of our undergraduate, I sought to marry the two approaches, leading to the generation of a ‘topography’ based upon data provided by a bitmap.

Grasshopper Grids Part 2

As mentioned in the previous post, one of the next steps was to translate the method into one that would allow for the replication of a predefined unit. Fortunately, I was able to broadly copy the grid generation already done, however, I tweaked it as I was no longer generating extrusions married to a set of perpendicular planes.

Welcome to Dublin

So, in an effort to help keep myself sane over the next one and a bit weeks, I think I’m going to start blogging again, prior to the Masters course actually commencing.

My focus has been rotating between playing in Rhino & Grasshopper - revisiting the approach I took to the undergrad archive project, specifically the grid generation method; learning German (A1) through the Goethe Institute (something I have admittedly been struggling with); reading Cloud Atlas; binge watching The West Wing; and staving off boredom during this quarantine period by re-learning how to play chess.

Amsterdam & Zurich

Two weeks ago I revisited Amsterdam, and then got the train down to Zurich.

The Amsterdam leg was mainly so I could see areas I didn’t originally get to when I traveled with the Uni back in 2015. Chiefly among them were the NDSM-Wherf & Eastern Docklands, although I did pop down to see the new …
